Mark Tucker hopes MSU can become an incubator for the next wave of NFL draft prospects. His success depends on the development of his players. He spent a decade as an assistant coach in the NFL. He is aware that life at the next level is transactional, competitive and ephemeral. Mark hopes to change that by building his roster in a pro-style offense. He has brought in former NFL pass rusher Brandon Jordan as a defensive assistant.
Michigan State football players cycled through drills Wednesday. Sun filtered through the windows in the Duffy Daugherty building and illuminated patches of turf. The event was held in shadows one year ago. But this year, Tucker and his staff are making progress. Last year, Tucker held a pro day that doubled as a marketing showcase for the school. Tucker hopes to build a pipeline of future NFL players.
MSU has slipped out of the draft in 2021
While Michigan State football hasn’t had a player picked in the last seven drafts, four Spartans have heard their name called this year. This is the most picks for MSU sports in a single draft since 2016. Running back Kenneth Walker III went to the Seattle Seahawks in the second round, at 41st overall. The Pittsburgh Steelers took offensive lineman Connor Heyward in the sixth round. And quarterback Anthony Russo went to the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round.
Two of MSU’s players have gone to the NFL draft this year, but the school’s record of two consecutive years without a player being chosen is still intact. Nailor could have returned to school and received a COVID-19 waiver, giving him an additional year of true eligibility. He also was one of three Spartans invited to the NFL combine, where he finished 19th among receivers. He also had high marks in the vertical jump and broad jump.
Mutatu, who has played both wide receiver and safety at MSU, is also a good choice to be picked by the Galaxy. The team talked to Mutatu at the combine, but they didn’t meet before the draft. He’ll head to Los Angeles on Friday, and is scheduled to report to the Galaxy for preseason camp on Monday. It’s unlikely he’ll be taken before that.
Tucker says he’s not worried about being drafted in 2022
Jordan Tucker is not worried about being drafted in 2022. His college career ended with a successful season capped off on the right side of the offensive line. His senior year saw him be a part of a front five that bulldozed running lanes for the Tarheels’ rushing attack. The Tarheels’ offense averaged 212.5 rushing yards per game and scored 35.2 points per game. The most important thing for Tucker, though, is his family.
The Pittsburgh Pirates designated Tucker for assignment at the end of May. The former Mountain Pointe high school player was expected to compete for a starting shortstop position this season. But injuries forced him to play mostly right field. Tucker also missed an opportunity to start at shortstop when Kevin Newman injured his groin. He spent most of the season on the injured list and was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis.
In his post, Tucker Carlson defended his decision to not declare himself eligible for the draft. The revelations that McCarthy made about the situation sparked a firestorm. Tucker has said that his team’s success is dependent on his performance. In addition to his performance on the field, he has also made a strong impression on his teammates. Tucker’s teammate Justin Verlander recently claimed he has “a lot of people who are worried about being drafted in 2022”.
